Welcome to our website.
This is a new venture for Compton Martin, a small village in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Chew Valley of North Somerset.
The History Society promotes the history of the area by talks, walks, site visits, displays, re-enactments, publications, and now this web site. We will be telling you more about us with future entries and in particular about our past and future publications. We would also like to put some of our references which support our research and publications on this site so that we can keep our research up to date via the web site.
We are happy to help your research for places and people in our area. Contact us here and we will share resources for our mutual benefit.

I have been looking into my father’s mothers side (paternal grandmother) and she came from compton martin circa 1870… Her name was Mabel lovell. She was one of four sisters, Her parents were Edwin Lovell who was a colt breaker and Anne James Lovell (nee Hunter). Would you have any records in your parish regarding births and extended family?
Would really appreciate any info yo have.
Many Thanks
Susan O’Byrne

I visited Compton Martin a few weeks ago trying to find out about my maternal grandmother Clarice Annie Parsons Durbin and was pleased to find the graves of her grandparents William and Sarah, and Uncle Albert in the churchyard and was lucky enough to met several very helpful people who showed me where some of her family would have lived. I Was just wondering if anyone in your group had any more information on the family?
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Thank you Stephen. Glad you had a successful visit to the village. We are on your case and will contact you directly soon.
